Lagos Govt Dismisses Speculation on Sanwo-Olu’s Resignation

By Victor Idajili

The Lagos State Government has denied reports claiming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to resign, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 28, the government clarified that there is no truth to claims suggesting the governor was pressured to step down over health-related concerns. It described the report as fabricated and intended to misinform the public and cause unnecessary tension in the state.

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, said the report reflects a pattern of fake news being circulated online. He stressed that Governor Sanwo-Olu is in good health and continues to perform his duties without interruption.

According to him, the governor remains fully active, both physically and mentally fit, and there has been no disruption in governance.

Akosile stated, “This report is false in its entirety. Nobody has asked the Lagos Governor to resign—this is another fake news, which has become a pattern of Sahara Reporters. Governor Sanwo-Olu remains in good health, of sound mind, and is actively discharging his duties as Governor of Lagos State.”

The government’s reaction followed a viral report alleging that the governor was under pressure to resign, with his deputy, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, allegedly being positioned to take over.

Akosile dismissed the claim, insisting that no such directive or pressure exists and that the story was designed to mislead the public.

He also clarified that a recent meeting between the governor and his deputy was routine and not linked to any political crisis or health concerns. During the meeting, Hamzat reportedly discussed his intentions regarding the 2027 governorship election.

The government reiterated that the meeting was normal, cordial, and should not be misinterpreted as evidence of instability within the administration.
