President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State and ordered a specialised security team to step up rescue operations for pupils and teachers kidnapped from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area.
The President also promised to consider residents’ request for a military base in the area to strengthen security and prevent future attacks.
A high-level Federal Government delegation conveyed the decisions Sunday during a visit to Esiele and Yawota communities. The communities were hit on May 15 when gunmen abducted pupils and teachers from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School.
Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, led the delegation and told residents the government was fully committed to bringing all victims home safely.
Gbajabiamila said Tinubu approved 1,000 forest guards to work with the Oyo State Government. Their job will be to improve surveillance in forests often used by criminal groups.
The delegation also received the community’s request for a military base. Gbajabiamila said it will be forwarded to the President for consideration and approval.
Tinubu directed a security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify operations to free the abducted pupils and teachers. The team will use intelligence-led operations, combining kinetic and non-kinetic measures.
“Mr. President is deeply troubled by this incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought back home safely,” Gbajabiamila told residents in English and Yoruba. “He has issued all necessary directives and is providing every support required by our security agencies.”
He acknowledged parents’ anxiety and calls for caution. “Your pain and anxiety are understood. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your arms,” he said. “The operation will be intelligence-led and carefully coordinated.”
Other members of the delegation included National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare.
The team later visited the palace of the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, to commiserate with the traditional ruler and his people. They also met Mrs. Mary Oyedokun, widow of the teacher killed in the attack, and her two children.
Gbajabiamila conveyed Tinubu’s condolences and assured the family of federal support. “The Federal Government will stand by you and ensure you do not suffer as a result of this tragedy,” he said.
