Panic in Mokwa as floodwater returns along the same route that killed 200+ people last year

Fear is spreading through Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State after floodwater started flowing again along the drainage path that caused last year’s deadly disaster.

On May 28, 2026, residents watched water move in from Yagbagba village and follow the exact route of the May 29, 2025 flood that killed over 200 people and displaced thousands. No deaths have been reported yet, but water kept rising near homes overnight, leaving families unable to sleep.

Locals say blocked drains and recent roadworks are making it worse. The blockages are stopping water from flowing freely, forcing it to back up toward residential areas.

“Water is coming from Yagbagba and heading straight for the same route hit in 2025,” one resident said. “It’s gathering behind a blocked drainage point. If it keeps building up, it will overflow into homes and we could see another disaster like last year.”

Another resident described the mood in the community: “Everyone is anxious. People stayed up all night watching the water level. We need urgent help from state and federal authorities before we lose lives and property again.”

Residents are also asking questions about relief funds donated after the 2025 flood. They want to know how the money was spent and whether any reconstruction work was actually done.

The worry is growing even though rainfall hasn’t been heavy. Water is still flowing from Yagbagba toward Mokwa as the rainy season begins, and many households are on high alert.

The May 29, 2025 flood in Mokwa LGA killed more than 200 people and destroyed homes and property across several communities. Residents are now pleading for immediate government intervention to prevent a repeat.
