The Nigeria Union of Journalists and the International Organization for Migration Nigeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote accurate, responsible, and ethical reporting of migration issues across the country.
The agreement was signed in Abuja during a joint engagement between the leadership of both organizations. Officials said the partnership will focus on capacity building, media advocacy, and improved communication around migration.
Speaking at the event, NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, said journalists have a critical role in shaping public understanding of migration and countering misinformation.
“The media must be equipped with the right knowledge and skills to report migration issues accurately, responsibly and professionally,” Yahya said.
“We must also raise awareness about the early warning signs of irregular migration and give proper attention to the opportunities, challenges and human experiences involved.”
He added that issues such as malnutrition and drug abuse linked to migration require greater media attention, and called for credible information that will help the public make informed decisions.
Welcoming the MoU, Yahya described it as an opportunity to deepen professional collaboration and provide training avenues for journalists across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, Ms. Sharon Dimanche, described journalists as “key partners” in communicating reliable information on migration.
“Accurate, balanced and responsible reporting can improve public understanding of migration, counter misinformation, and reduce the number of people falling victim to scammers who use online and social media platforms to perpetrate fraud,” Dimanche said.
According to IOM, areas of collaboration under the MoU will include safe migration, the benefits and opportunities of migration, durable solutions, emergency response, health concerns, and issues affecting both migrants and host communities.
The event also featured an overview of the MoU, the formal signing and exchange of documents, and an interactive session where journalists engaged IOM officials on migration-related issues.
Both organizations said the partnership marks a significant step toward sustained cooperation aimed at more informed and impactful migration reporting in Nigeria.
