FG Links Water Access to Gender Equality Drive
By Victor Idajili

The Federal Government has underscored the critical link between water access and gender equality, revealing that over 6,700 water schemes have been constructed or rehabilitated nationwide, benefiting more than 32 million Nigerians.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, made this known while commemorating World Water Day 2026, themed “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.” He explained that the theme highlights the strong connection between water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and the advancement of gender equality, in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5 and 6.
Utsev disclosed that the ministry has also delivered 5,238 public sanitation facilities across the country, with 162 Local Government Areas (LGAs) now certified Open Defecation Free (ODF). He noted that these milestones are part of a broader strategy to improve public health outcomes while reducing the disproportionate burden placed on women and girls in accessing water.
The minister further emphasized ongoing efforts to integrate gender-responsive approaches into WASH programmes, including promoting women’s participation and leadership in water governance. He cited flagship initiatives such as the Dadin Kowa Irrigation Scheme and the Middle Ogun Irrigation Project as key interventions enhancing water security, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods.
Calling for sustained collaboration, Utsev urged stakeholders to deepen investment, strengthen accountability, and scale up inclusive policies to ensure equitable water access, stressing that improved water systems remain central to empowering women and fostering national development.
