Jonathan Dismisses N500bn “Vote-Splitting” Story as Fake News

By Victor Idajili

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports claiming he was offered N500 billion to run against NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and split South-South votes.

In a statement issued Sunday in Abuja, his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, described the report as “entirely false and baseless.”

Eze said the story was published by a “little-known website” and wrongly attributed comments to Jonathan. According to him, the report did not provide any credible details.

“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” Eze said.

He added that the publication has all the signs of fake news designed to mislead the public and pull the former president into needless political drama.

While noting that misinformation usually rises as elections approach, Eze urged Nigerians to ignore the report and fact-check sensational claims before sharing them.

“The approach of a political season often brings a surge in misinformation and false attributions,” he said. “We call on the public to disregard the report in its entirety.”
